In Full Swing
The beginning of July and after the heatwave the flowers are blessed to have some rain and so am I to be honest as rainwater is the very best thing for them. July is a busy time on the farm with harvesting, delivering orders and the dreaded weeding! This is our second season flower farming and every day brings something new to learn, we had to get to know our soil, where the flowers like to live ( we lost a lot of roses last year as they weren’t happy in their position) and we have to work around the abundant wildlife here on the farm, namely the rabbits and the Muntjac deer who are very partial to our best blooms, they do not consider Bearded Iris’s a delicacy however for which I am forever thankful as next to the rose they are my favourite flower.
The last couple of weeks have been all about the bed flip, pulling the biennials to make space for the late Summer flowers, our cutting garden is small but mighty. It is amazing how many flowers you can grow if you plan your space well enough. Something I learnt from the amazing Erin at Floret.
So as we go in to July things will really start to ramp up with the arrival of the Dahlias and Cosmos, two of the most generous flowers your can grow in your cutting garden, we have some beautiful varieties this year to fill your vases. The beauty of Summer continues
